I’m Laurie Butson, Training and Development Manager at IDG. I oversee both our corporate program offerings worldwide as well as our numerous, topic-specific training programs for all employees in the U.S. I’ve been with IDG for seven years.
Why I’m here I'd been working in secondary education prior to coming to IDG and have always had a passion for learning and educating. I was interested in working in an education capacity in a business setting. I love knowing that what we do in training and development is helping people learn, grow and enhance their jobs, skills and work relationships. I appreciate how much training and development is supported and valued across the organization. Our third corporate value is "to invest in our people through training and career development" and that is truly adhered to across the company. It is wonderful to work for a company that values training and to know what we do makes a difference.
On the job My work environment is fun, casual and invigorating because there are so many smart, talented people surrounding me -- both within the HR community, as well as the larger employee population with which I get to interact often. I love the interaction I have with all the IDG business units and all levels of employees at the business units. I think this is one of the most exciting aspects of my job. Getting to know so many different people across the company is so rewarding and interesting. These interactions allow me to get to know the employees and keep a finger on the pulse of our growing and changing business, both of which help us to develop timely, relevant training offerings to meet the needs of IDG employees and business units.
Career growth There are always opportunities to grow at IDG. Things are always changing and our industry is in such an exciting time, therefore there are always new things to learn, try and do, which means there are always new opportunities for new training and development initiatives! I also think that IDG as a whole is very open to the internal transfer policy, which allows employees to seek out and transfer to new opportunities across different business units.
What sets us apart IDG's decentralized corporate structure is a plus. That said, I see the business units working together more and more these days where it makes sense. So I feel we have the best of both worlds -- a decentralized operating structure that allows individual business unit management teams to capitalize on centralized efforts and opportunities as they arise.
