I’m Scot Finnie, online editorial director at Computerworld. My primary responsibility is to set the strategic editorial direction for Computerworld.com with the goal of growing the site significantly over the next year -- and beyond.
Why I’m here I was excited by the opportunity to shape Computerworld's online direction. I had been working for a competitor, and realized that this job, at this time, was perfect for me. Within my first six weeks on the job, we relaunched the Computerworld site with a new design, new content management system, new search technology, and new editorial tools. We also published the largest page-view generating story in Computerworld's history.
On the job The online editorial here is first rate, and there's a strong feeling of support and long-held views about journalistic quality. I very much enjoy developing a team of people with common goals, working on deadline to meet those goals, and creating content that uniquely reaches our audience in the process. I like working with new media, and dreaming up new kinds of content.
Career growth I think that any time you're experiencing rapid growth -- and the online area is definitely seeing that -- there's likely to be opportunity. We're growing so quickly that we're creating positions with different job descriptions, and though it's not completely clear where the up-staircase is or where it leads, it's part of the risk of being on the cutting edge for career paths to be uncertain. I don't mind it at all; I wouldn't trade this job for anything. I'll take the bet that the opportunity will be there when the time is right.
What sets us apart It's the people. In all phases of our business, there's a thrumming sense of excitement at Computerworld about where we are and where we're going -- especially online. I'm attracted to that buzz, as are many other insightful, engaging people here. We're working together to move Computerworld to the next level. It's an exciting time to be in this business, and to be here.
